The collateral ligaments
Collateral ligament injuries can appear isolated or combined, especially in connection with injuries of the cruciate ligament. Isolated sideband injuries mainly appear in the case of children. These injuries can healed easily with a splint.
In the adult age concomitant injuries must be excluded. Isolated injuries of the medial collateral ligament are sedated with a splint and depending on the degree of severity the exercise therapy starts very quickly.
A surgical treatment of collateral ligament injuries is only necessary, if concomitant injuries (capsule avulsion, meniscus injury, torn tendon) exist or if covered and translocated parts of the band prevent the healing process.
